KUALA LUMPUR (May 4): The Ministry of Health (MoH) has detected a new Covid-19 cluster in Kuching, called the Taman BDC cluster, that has been traced back to an index case from the Tabligh assembly in the Sri Petaling Mosque here.

MoH director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said there were a total of 37 positive cases from the cluster. Of that, seven cases have recovered and two have reportedly passed away from the disease.

"The index case is actually from the Sri Petaling gathering and has infected three generations; mainly the family members as well as those mosque-goers and also their colleagues,” he told reporters during his daily Covid-19 press briefing today.

However, based on the data released by MoH today, the cases at Taman BDC were not newly detected but have just been classified as a new cluster through the ministry's contact tracing.

No new cases were reported from this cluster today.

Meanwhile, 16 new cases were recorded among the Pasar Chow Kit cluster, bringing the total confirmed cases there to 44.

New cases reported in the main clusters include five from the Sendayan cluster, three from the Pesantren cluster, two from the Kampung Baru cluster and one from the Madrasah Ayer Merbau cluster.

No new cases have been reported in other main clusters. So far, the ministry has detected 35 main clusters and sub-clusters of Covid-19 infections in Malaysia.

The largest cluster is still the cluster related to the Tabligh gathering at the Sri Petaling Mosque, which has 2,266 confirmed cases so far, accounting for about 35% of the total 6,353 cases reported in the country.

The majority of new cases confirmed in the past few days are related to clusters, while community infections and non-cluster cases make up a smaller number.

Of the new 55 cases reported today, 48 were local infections, of which 24 were confirmed in three Enhanced Movement Control Order (EMCO) areas in Kuala Lumpur, namely Selangor Mansion (two cases), Malayan Mansion (one case) and Pusat Bandar Utara and Pasar Borong Kuala Lumpur, Selayang (21 cases).

The remaining seven were imported cases.

However, the EMCO in Menara City One, Malayan Mansion and Selangor Mansion buildings, as well as other parts of Masjid India, had ended yesterday.
