KUALA LUMPUR (Nov 29): The Ministry of Finance (MoF) today tabled four Bills in the Dewan Rakyat for first reading to amend existing laws mainly to increase enforcement officers’ investigation powers to be on par with that of the police, while raising the penalties for certain offences.

The Bills, tabled by Deputy Finance Minister Datuk Amiruddin Hamzah, involve amendments to the Sales Tax Act 2018, Service Tax Act 2018, Excise Act 1976 and Customs Act 1967.

The Ministry is seeking to increase the power of senior officers under these Acts to be on par with the police as provided for under the Criminal Procedure Code, in relation to enforcement, inspection and investigation.

In addition, for the Excise Act and Customs Act, MoF is seeking to increase the penalties for certain offence such as evasion of excise duty, smuggling and offering or receiving bribes.
