KUALA LUMPUR (March 12): De facto law minister Datuk Liew Vui Keong said he does not see the rush to name the replacement for Chief Justice Tan Sri Richard Malanjum, who is scheduled to retire exactly one month from today.

"I have to leave it to the Prime Minister to make the recommendation to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong," he told reporters after the launching of e-review and video conferencing at the Kuala Lumpur Courts Complex today.

Under Article 122B(1) of the Federal Constitution, the chief justice of the Federal Court shall be appointed by the King acting on the advice of the Prime Minister, after consulting the Conference of Rulers.

Asked if the Judicial Appointment's Commission has shortlisted any candidate to replace Malanjum, Liew said: "I don't know, it's not through me."

The e-review module is an online forum within the e-court system to conduct case management via exchange of written messages without having lawyers to be physically present in court.

This is in line with the objective of this module, which is to reduce the presence of lawyers physically, saving time and money for case management purposes.

Meanwhile, the video conferencing is a service that allows the trial of a case to proceed virtually even though judges and lawyers are in different locations.

This service enables the parties involved in the hearing of the case to appear before the judge without the need to be in the same court premises. Lawyers and stakeholders are allowed to enjoy three months of free usage of the service from this month onwards.
