KUALA LUMPUR (Oct 8): Premium German automaker Mercedes-Benz Malaysia Sdn Bhd announced that it has sold 3,033 vehicles in the third quarter of this year (3Q15), up 109% from 1,451 vehicles sold in the same period last year.

This marked the third consecutive quarter of four-digit sales figure recorded by the group.

Year-to-date, the car maker has sold a total of 8,196 units, representing a 70% on year growth from 4,817 units sold in the last corresponding period.

Mercedes-Benz Malaysia is a unit of Bursa-listed Cycle & Carriage Bintang Bhd. The better sales will contribute positively to the group earnings.

Mercedes-Benz Malaysia president and chief executive officer Claus Weidner said the strong performance was driven by the locally-produced Mercedes-Benz models — the C-, E- and S-Class — contributing to the majority of the units sold (2,188 units in total).

He added the sustained growth in 3Q15 was also supported by Mercedes-Benz Malaysia's compact cars segment with sales totalling 838 units, registering an 87% increase from last year.

In August, Claus said the group successfully sold 7,194 units, surpassing 6,932 units in financial year 2014 (FY14), setting 2015 as another record-breaking year.

"We are moving from strength to strength and have certainly tipped historical sales figures for Mercedes-Benz Malaysia.

"The three consecutive four-digit sales in 3Q15 is a welcomed addition to our string of record quarters," he said.

"This is a true testament of Mercedes-Benz's tradition of excellence throughout our entire operations and commitment to providing customers with quality, luxury passenger cars and the best customer service," he added.

In 3Q15, the locally produced C-Class registered 861 units, a 210% increase from last year; while the sales of E-Class surged 72% to 679 units.

Meanwhile, the locally produced hybrid luxury S-Class maintained a strong momentum, selling 648 units in 3Q15, up 127% compared to the previous year.

Over at the compact cars segment, Mercedes-Benz Malaysia said the segment recorded total sales of 838 units, 87% higher compared to 3Q14.

Leading the pack was the CLA recording sales of 301 units, an increase of 91% from the same period in 2014, Claus said.

While GLA, he said, also contributed significantly to the segment by recording total sales of 299 units in the quarter under review.

On the dream cars segment, he said Mercedes-Benz Malaysia charted a yield to date sales of 302 units of Mercedes-Benz AMG.

Last year, Mercedes-Benz Malaysia — ranked 14th in the country in terms of overall sales volume and third among European cars sold — saw sales of its cars jump 28.5% to 7,131 units from 5,550 units in 2013, which expanded its market share to 1.1% from 0.8% previously.
