KUALA LUMPUR (April 12): The Malaysian Employers Federation (MEF) has welcomed a government initiative to implement an e-wage system to ensure that all workers, private and foreign, are paid on time.

In a statement today, MEF president Datuk Dr Syed Hussain Syed Husman J.P. said companies should be paying their employees within the stipulated deadline as it is a requirement of the law.

"The e-wage system will ensure that all workers in the country, including foreign workers, are paid their salaries and wages lest lawful deductions on time as contracted by their employers.

“There is no reason for employers not to pay local and foreign employees within the stipulated dateline as this is a requirement of the law,” he said.

The MEF stated that it also understands that the human resources minister’s team had met with the Ministry of Home Affairs to fine-tune the e-wage system, currently in the final stage, before it could be implemented.

“The above means that employers must comply with the labour law to pay wages not later than the seventh day of the wage period, and [the] penalty for such breach is hefty at RM10,000 per offence,” said Syed Hussain.
