KUALA LUMPUR (April 27): The Malaysia Digital Economy Corp (MDEC) aims to have 875,000 micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) adopt e-commerce by 2025 under the new National eCommerce Strategic Roadmap 2.0 (NESR 2.0).

In a statement, the corporation said the road map also seeks to boost e-commerce export adoption among 84,000 MSMEs and increase the average revenue per user to RM9,500.

The NESR 2.0, which was recently endorsed by the National Council of Digital Economy and 4IR, aims to support the growth of Malaysia's e-commerce market.

NESR 2.0 will be guided by three overaching objectives, namely to intensify e-commerce adoption and growth, to enhance ecosystem development and to strengthen policy and regulatory environment.

These key objectives are aligned to the Malaysia Digital Economy Blueprint (MyDIGITAL) under Thrust Two — boosting economic competitiveness through digitalisation and Thrust Five which aims to create an inclusive digital society.

MDEC will lead the project management office of the NESR 2.0 Taskforce.

"The success of NESR 1.0 highlighted the potential for e-commerce in Malaysia is enormous and we are motivated further to fuel our efforts to boost the local e-commerce market, in line with positioning Malaysia as the the heart of digital ASEAN," said MDEC chief executive officer Surina Shukri.

The new road map comes amid MDEC's projections that the gross merchandising value (GMV) of Malaysia's e-commerce market is expected to grow by 6% to US$11.4 billion this year, placing it among Southeast Asia's biggest markets.

Citing the e-Conomy SEA 2020 report by Google, Temasek, and Bain & Company, the corporation said the GMV is expected to swell to US$30 billion by 2025.

As at the end of 2020, more than 489,000 MSMEs had adopted e-commerce while 378,000 SMEs were trained in e-commerce. SMEs exporting grew exponentially from 1,800 to 27,000. The sector also attracted investments worth RM1.5 billion for the establishment of regional e-fulfilment hubs.
