SHAH ALAM: Hours after his appointment yesterday as the new Selangor Menteri Besar, Mohamed Azmin Ali pledged to manage the state with transparency.

In a maiden speech at his house in Kampung Klang Gate Baru where he grew up, Mohamed Azmin promised to work hard and take care of the people in Selangor.

“I also give my word that I will carry out my duties with trust and integrity,” he told the crowd who gathered at his mother’s house.

Mohamed Azmin, who is PKR deputy president, said the RM3 billion reserves in Selangor will be used for the interest of the people.

“Every single sen of the state fund belongs to the people. The money must be translated into developmental programmes for the good of the people of this state,” the Bukit Antarabangsa assemblyman said.

Among the agreements that will be reviewed are the water deal, the controversial Kinrara–Damansara Expressway or Kidex, and the seizures of Bahasa Malaysia and Iban language Bibles.

Explaining the choice of Mohamed Azmin for the MB’s post, a palace official said the Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah was confident that Azmin would have the support of his party and Pakatan Rakyat.

The Sultan’s private secretary, Datuk Mohamad Munir Bani, said the ruler had considered the fact that the state government was formed through a pact among PKR, DAP and PAS.

He said the Sultan also understood that the new MB had to be appointed from among the PKR assemblymen in Selangor in order to enjoy the confidence of the majority and the support from Pakatan parties in the state assembly.

Mohamed Azmin is expected to finalise a fresh line-up of state executive councillors by tomorrow to enable the installation to be held on Friday.

He said in line with a call by the Sultan to finalise everything quickly, discussions about the line-up will be held to decide the final list of councillors by tomorrow.

On the fate of the four incumbent executive councillors from PAS who were under former menteri besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim’s administration, Azmin said any decision taken would be based on prior discussions.

“We will try to resolve the issues through discussions so that a decision can be made by Thursday (tomorrow), before the swearing-in ceremony,” he told reporters at the Istana Alam Shah in Klang. — by MD Izwan/The Malaysian Insider
