KUALA LUMPUR (Jan 6): Malayan Banking Bhd (Maybank) said today some of its branches have been affected by the current flood situation in Malaysia and will be temporarily closed.

"We apologise for any inconvenience caused and thank you for your understanding and patience. For those affected by the floods, please stay safe!” said Maybank, which is Malaysia’s most-valuable listed group.

The floods in Pahang, Terengganu and Kelantan are reported to have worsened. Bernama reported today more people were being evacuated due to the floods in Pahang, Terengganu and Kelantan, while the situations in Perak, Selangor and Johor are reported to be improving with the drop in the number of evacuees.

In Pahang, the situation was reported to have worsened with 18,976 people, involving 5,032 families, having been evacuated to 241 relief centres as at 7.30am today.

In Terengganu, chief secretariat of the state disaster management committee, Lt Col (PA) Che Adam A Rahman reportedly said the number of flood victims had increased to 267 people at 8am today, from 117 people at 3pm yesterday. "Two relief centres were reopened in Dungun to accommodate the 156 evacuees," he said.

In Kelantan, it was reported that Tanah Merah was the second district to be hit by the floods with eight relief centres being activated to accommodate 125 evacuees from 33 families as at 8am today.

It was reported that according to JKM's InfoBencana, Gua Musang was the first district, but the situation has improved with all the relief centres in the district closed yesterday.

At Bursa Malaysia's 12.30pm break today, Maybank's share price settled down eight sen or 0.96% at RM8.23 for a market value of about RM92.52 billion.
