KUALA LUMPUR (June 5): Malaysia’s new daily cases, which soared to 277 on Thursday, dropped sharply to 19 on Friday of which 12 were local transmissions while seven were imported cases, the Ministry of Health (MoH) announced.

Of 12 local transmissions, nine cases involved Malaysians, while the remaining three are non-citizens.

This brought the total infections in the country to 8,266, according to Health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

There are 1,540 active cases in the country.

There are currently six patients in intensive care units while one of them is on respiratory assistance.

The MoH reported 51 recoveries today, bringing total recoveries to 6,610.

The recovery rate in Malaysia is now at 80% of total cases.

Of the 19 new cases nine are in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur (four), Sabah (three), Pahang (one), Melaka (one) and Sarawak (one).

One new death was recorded, after 13 days without any fatalities.

The country’s COVID-19 death toll increased to 116, translating into 1.4% of overall cases.  

The deceased was a 61-year-old man who had diabetes, high blood pressure and kidney cancer. Admitted to Enche’ Besar Hajjah Khalsom Hospital in Johor on May 29, he was pronounced dead yesterday at 10.20pm.
