KUALA LUMPUR (Feb 22): Malaysia's inflation, as measured by the consumer price index (CPI), rose 3.2% from a year earlier in January, mainly on increases in transport, besides food and non-alcoholic beverages.
On a monthly basis, the CPI increased by 1.1%.
In a statement today, the Statistics Department said the transport group showed a significant increase of 8.3% on a yearly basis, after falling 0.6% and 1.5% respectively in December and November 2016.
The other groups that recorded increases included food and non-alcoholic beverages (4%), recreation services and culture (3.2%), health (2.5%), restaurants and hotels (2.1%), education (2%), and housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels at 1.9%.
