KUALA LUMPUR (March 22): Malaysia remained in deflation for the second consecutive month as the consumer price index (CPI) fell 0.4% in February 2019 from a year earlier, led by the drop in transport cost, the Statistics Department said today.

In a statement, the department's chief statistician Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin said the 6.8% decrease in the CPI's transport component, which contributed 14.6% of the CPI's overall weightage, was countered by the increase in the housing, water, electricity, gas & other fuels component besides the food and non-alcoholic beverages segment at 2% and 1% respectively.

"The overall index for CPI posted -0.4% in February 2019 as compared to -0.7% in the previous month. In terms of index number, the CPI recorded 120.8 as against 121.3 in corresponding month of the preceding year.

"CPI for the period of January-February 2019 declined by 0.5% as compared to the same period last year. On a monthly basis, CPI increased 0.2% as compared to January 2019," Mohd Uzir said.

According to the department's statement, in terms of overall CPI, all states recorded a decrease of between 0.2% and 1.4% in February 2019 from a year earlier. However, Kuala Lumpur and Penang showed an increase of 0.3% and 0.2% respectively.
