KUALA LUMPUR (April 6): Malaysian exports rose 6.7% to RM56.7 billion from a year earlier on higher sales of electrical and electronic (E&E), oil palm and timber products to major markets.

In a statement today, the Statistics Department said E&E product sales rose 8.9%. Oil palm and timber-based exports climbed 7.5% and 17.4% respectively.

In geographical terms, Malaysia registered higher exports to countries like the US, China, South Korea, Indonesia and European Union nations.

Malaysian imports also rose. The department said imports climbed 1.6% to RM49.4 billion from a year earlier.

The department said imports rose as the country purchased more consumption and capital goods from abroad.

February export and import numbers led to trade surplus of about RM7.4 billion, up 61.4% from a year earlier.

Total trade rose 4.2% to RM106.1 billion.
