KUALA LUMPUR (Jan 31): Malaysia's inflation rate rose 0.2% in December from a year earlier, the same growth rate as in November, said Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM).

For 2018 as a whole, headline inflation averaged at 1% compared with 3.7% posted in 2017, BNM said in a statement.

The consumer price index (CPI) growth of 0.2% in December was mainly reflecting the negative contribution from transportation inflation due to the base effect, the central bank said.

Other than the transportation group, food and non-alcoholic beverages showed moderate growth of 0.7% during the month, as compared to a growth of 1.1% in November.

"Excluding the impact of changes in consumption tax policy, core inflation remained broadly stable at 1.6% (November: 1.6%)," the central bank said.
