KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 17): Malaysia's daily Covid-19 numbers slipped to 19,631 today from 19,740 the day before — the second day of decline after daily cases topped 20,000 for five straight days.

The latest cases were detected from the screening of 149,750 individuals across the country, indicating a positivity rate of 13.11%.

Another 293 deaths were reported — involving 251 Malaysians and 42 foreigners — lifting total fatalities linked to the coronavirus so far to 13,077, said Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah in a statement.

Of the latest fatalities, 90 were reported in Selangor, 47 in Kuala Lumpur, 42 in Johor, 21 in Pahang, 19 in Melaka, 19 in Perak, 15 in Sabah, nine each in Negeri Sembilan and Kedah, eight in Penang, seven in Kelantan, five in Terengganu and two in Sarawak.

A total of 44 or 15% of the new fatalities were brought in dead upon reaching the hospital. They involved 28 Malaysians and 16 foreigners.

Active cases continued to rise to 252,147 from 249,277 a day ago, as new recoveries came in lower than infections at 16,468.

There are now 1,054 patients in intensive care units, of whom 525 need ventilators to breathe.

84.75% of latest cases unvaccinated and not fully vaccinated

Dr Noor Hisham said 16,638 cases or 84.75% of today's Covid-19 cases comprised patients who were unvaccinated or have not yet completed their second dose of the vaccination.

He also noted that 19,326 or 98.4% of the latest cases were in Categories 1 (no symptoms) and 2 (mild symptoms), while 305 cases or 1.6% were in Categories 3 (patients with pneumonia), 4 (with pneumonia requiring oxygen therapy) and 5 (critical cases needing assisted ventilation).

Selangor again topped the list with the highest number of new infections reported at 5,753, followed by Sabah (2,103), Kedah (1,863) and Kuala Lumpur (1,765).

A total of 39 new clusters were also reported involving 23 workplace clusters, 13 community clusters, two detention clusters and one high risk group cluster with 1,289 total infections. The country has reported 4,257 clusters so far, including 2,897 that have been declared ended.
