KUALA LUMPUR (June 11): Malaysia's wholesale and retail trade sales value grew 5.3% to RM105.1 billion in April 2019 from a year earlier, helped by the 6.3% and 5.3% expansion in the retail and wholesale segments respectively.

In a statement today, Statistics Department chief statistician Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin said retail sales value expanded 6.3%, driven by sales of food, beverages and tobacco, which rose 8.8%, and sales in non-specialised stores, which climbed 7%.

"For wholesale trade, sales value rose 5.3% from a year ago, while motor vehicles registered annual growth of 2.2%," he said.

In monthly terms, the nation's wholesale and retail sales value contracted 4% in April 2019, according to Mohd Uzir.

"All sub-sectors experienced negative growth in April 2019, mainly retail trade subsector which slipped to 4.7%. Within the same period, wholesale trade and motor vehicles sub-sector also recorded negative growth of 3.8% and 2.0% respectively," he said.

The nation's wholesale and retail volume index rose 4.9% from a year earlier, according to the statement.

Mohd Uzir said the gain was propelled by the retail segment's 6.9% growth followed by the motor vehicles and wholesale components' 3.5% and 3.3% growth respectively.
