KUALA LUMPUR (Jan 25): Malaysia is ranked 55th in Transparency International's Corruption Perceptions Index 2016, with a score of 49 out of 100.

Transparency International said on its website that over two-thirds of the 176 countries and territories in the 2016 index had scores below the midpoint of its scale of 0 (highly corrupt) to 100 (very clean).

"The global average score is a paltry 43, indicating endemic corruption in a country's public sector," Transparency International said.

On Malaysia, the index showed that the country's 2016 score of 49 fell from 50 in 2015.

Denmark and New Zealand shared the first place with scores of 90 each, while Somalia with a score at 10 came in last, according to the index.
Singapore was ranked seventh with a score of 84, the index showed.

At a press conference here today, Transparency International – Malaysia (TI-M) president Datuk Akhbar Satar said Malaysia's rank fell to 55th, from 54th in 2015.

Akbar said to keep a system "clean", a country's leader must send a clear signal that he or she is committed to eradicate corruption.

Akhbar said the tone at the top was essential for effective governance.
