KUALA LUMPUR (Feb 27): Malaysia’s Department of Veterinary Services said the origin of the country’s first African Swine Fever occurrence, which was confirmed on Feb 19, 2021, is unknown and inconclusive, and the outbreak in Sabah is ongoing.

"First occurrence in the country. Weekly follow-up reports will be submitted,” the department’s veterinary officer Dr Sarah Dadang Abdullah indicated in the immediate notification document, which was filed with the World Organisation for Animal Health.

The document was available on the World Organisation for Animal Health’s website since yesterday.

Malaysia’s Department of Veterinary Services is run under the purview of the Agriculture and Food Industries Ministry.

Dr Sarah indicated in the notification document that the outbreak, which started on Feb 8, 2021, involved clusters in areas including Pitas and Kota Marudu.

She indicated that tests conducted on domestic pigs and wild boars on Feb 19, 2021 showed these animals tested positive for the African swine fever virus.
