KUALA LUMPUR (Feb 7): Malaysia’s new Covid-19 infections dropped to 3,73 from 3,847 reported yesterday, but active cases continue to climb to 51,241 today.
This marks the second consecutive day that active cases stayed above the 50,000 level. So far, 292 Covid-19 patients are currently being treated in intensive care units, with 140 needing breathing assistance.
In the same 24-hour period, there were 15 fatalities, bringing the death toll to 872, the Health Ministry said in a statement today.
Four deaths were reported in Selangor, followed by Kuala Lumpur (three deaths), Sabah (three), Sarawak (two), Penang (one), Kedah (one) and Johor (one). All fatalities involved Malaysians aged between 18 and 94 years.
Among new infections, 3,723 were locally-transmitted cases, comprising 1,946 Malaysians and 1,777 foreigners, said health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.
Meanwhile, the remaining eight cases were imported — meaning the patients had contracted the virus from abroad — involving four Malaysians and four foreigners.
Selangor continued to record the most number of daily cases with 1,606, said Dr Noor Hisham. From this total, 1,025 cases or 63.8% were confirmed from screening of close contacts of Covid-19 positive patients and Covid-19 clusters.
This was followed by Johor with 499 cases, Kuala Lumpur (372) and Melaka (313), according to him.
There were also 3,369 recoveries, which means 190,339 patients have recovered from the disease nationwide.
To date, Malaysia’s cumulative confirmed infections due to the pandemic stood at 242,452, from just 115,078 reported on Jan 1.
