KUALA LUMPUR (April 20): New Covid-19 cases in the country rose to 2,341 today from 2,195 yesterday. This marked the sixth consecutive day that new cases stayed above the 2,000 mark. The latest additions brought the total number of Covid-19 cases in the country so far to 379,473.

Sarawak recorded the highest number of cases for the day with 600 infections, according to Health diorector-general Tan Sri Noor Hisham Abdullah in a statement.

Selangor followed closely behind with 539 cases, while Kuala Lumpur recorded 344 infections – more than double the 153 reported yesterday. Next came Johor (102 cases), Penang (92), and Sabah (82).

Of the 2,341 new infections, seven were imported cases.

There were also three more deaths linked to the coronavirus in the last 24 hours, one each in Selangor, Sabah and Sarawak. This raised the death toll from the pandemic in Malaysia to 1,389 or 0.37% of overall infections.

A total of 1,592 recoveries were reported today, raising the total number of recoveries in the country to 356,816, representing a recovery rate of 94.0%.

The number of active cases – which carry transmission risks – stood at 21,268 cases.

Seven new clusters found

The health ministry has identified seven new infection clusters, four being community clusters, one from an education centre, one from a school/institution affiliated with the Education Ministry, and one workplace cluster.

Of the four community clusters, two were found in Sarawak (Kampung Tengah Betong and Sungai Rian), while one each was found in Selangor (Jalan Meranti) and Kuala Lumpur (Taman Dato Senu).

The education centre cluster was found in Kelantan (Jalan Pasir Mas-Pohon Tanjung), while the school/education institution cluster was found in Penang (Jalan Padang Lallang). The sole workplace cluster was also found in Penang (Hala Kampung Jawa).

The ministry has identified 1,541 Covid-19 clusters to date, of which 1,201 have ended, leaving 340 active clusters.

The clusters that reported the highest numbers of Covid-19 cases today were Pulai Chondong (79), the Kampung Domis (51), and Sungai Rian (47).
