KUALA LUMPUR (March 11): A total of 1,647 new Covid-19 cases were reported in Malaysia today, the sixth straight day with less than 2,000 infections.

Today’s figure is however higher by 199 cases compared with the 1,448 infections reported yesterday, and brought the country’s cumulative confirmed infections to 319,364.

Another nine individuals, all Malaysians, have died from Covid-19, raising the country’s death toll to 1,200, said Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

Four deaths were reported in Selangor, two in Johor and one each in Perak, Kelantan and Kuala Lumpur. The deceased were aged between 48 and 78 years.

Selangor continued to account for the most cases at 712, followed by Johor (170), Penang (169), Sarawak (168), Kuala Lumpur (86), Negeri Sembilan (79), Melaka (71), Perak (69), Sabah (61), Kelantan (28), Kedah (18), Pahang (seven), Terengganu (four) Putrajaya (two), Perlis (two) and Labuan (one).

Dr Noor Hisham said 116 of the cases reported today were from the Covid-19 prison and detention centre clusters, namely DTI Machap Umboo in Melaka (67), Tembok Tapah in Perak (38), Tembok Mempaga in Pahang (five), Jalan Harapan prison in Selangor (three), DTI Persiaran Wawasan in Perlis (two) and Tembok Pengkalan Chepa in Kelantan (one).

Another 2,104 Covid-19 patients were reported as discharged in the latest 24-hour reporting period, raising total recoveries to 300,620.

With this, active cases have dipped further to 17,544, the lowest since Dec 22 last year.

Five new clusters detected

Dr Noor Hisham said five more Covid-19 clusters were detected in the last 24-hour period including three workplace clusters, namely Tapak Bina Jalan Kenangan in Klang (31 infections), Teknologi Tenggara in Batu Pahat (12), and Jalan Masyhur Enam in Johor Bahru (52).

Of the remaining two clusters, one was from the community (Jambatan Satu Bombalai in Kalabakan, Sabah with 15 infections) and the other was from a detention centre (DTI Machap Umboo in Alor Gajah, Melaka with 83 infections).

To date, 1,222 clusters have been reported in the country, of which 782 have been declared ended.
