KUALA LUMPUR (May 9): Malaysia recorded 54 new Covid-19 infections as of noon today, with 83% or 45 cases being discovered among foreign nationals, pushing the country's Covid-19 tally to 6,589 cases.

It also saw 65 recoveries, and one more death — a 74-year-old Malaysian woman with a history of high blood pressure, thyroid and autoimmune diseases — according to the Ministry of Health's (MoH) director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah in a statement today.

This means 4,929 or 74.8% of the total infected had recovered, while the country's death toll from the pandemic stood at 108 or 1.64% of the total.

This leaves 1,552 active cases. Of that, 18 were in intensive care units (ICUs), with six requiring respiratory aid.

"Out of the 54 new cases reported today, one was an imported case. This means the local spread of the disease accounted for 53 cases, whereby three were detected outside the enhanced movement control order (EMCO) cluster and locality," said Noor Hisham.

He also reiterated his advice to the public to continue to practice the new normal that includes social distancing with at least a metre apart from one another, and to avoid leaving home unless it is for important matters.

Hygiene must also be kept at the optimum level at all times, with frequent handwashing with soap, he added.

The director-general, who had a day-off with part of his team — their first since December — did not have his daily press briefing today.
