KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 25): Malaysia’s daily new Covid-19 cases rose to 11 — from seven reported yesterday — which is almost double today’s six recoveries, according to the Ministry of Health (MoH).

The latest infections raise total cases in the country to 9,285, while recoveries rose to 8,971, or 96.6% of all cases.

No fatalities were reported for the 26th day, keeping the death toll at 125.

However, the number of active cases rose slightly to 189 from 184 reported yesterday. So far, eight patients are in intensive care with six of them needing respiratory assistance.

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said the 11 new cases today comprised nine locally transmitted cases and two imported cases.

“The nine locally transmitted cases involved Malaysians where seven cases were found in Kedah, one in Perlis and the other in Selangor,” said Noor Hisham at a media briefing today.

In Kedah, five cases were found from the Tawar cluster. Meanwhile, one case was detected from pre-surgery screening at the Sultan Abdul Halim Hospital, and was subsequently transferred to Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital; the seventh case was symptomatic.

The Selangor case involved an asymptomatic individual who has been admitted to Sungai Buloh Hospital, while the Perlis case involved a patient with severe acute respiratory infection at the Tuanku Fauziah Hospital.

As for the two imported cases, they involved one Malaysian who had returned from the Philippines and one foreigner who came from Indonesia.

The two imported cases were detected in Selangor, he said.

On another note, Noor Hisham also mentioned that there were four clusters in Sarawak that have ended — namely the Sentosa, Satok, Melbourne and Kuching engineering clusters. Thus, 89 clusters in Malaysia have ended.

The number of confirmed coronavirus cases around the world has soared to almost 24 million while deaths have blown past 800,000.
