BEIJING (April 28): Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said there may be opportunities for Malaysia to work with Huawei Technologies Co Ltd and SenseTime Group Ltd, whose offices he visited here this week, to bring in their technology and artificial intelligence (AI) solutions to Malaysia.

“We find that Huawei is very advanced in terms of technology and the use of AI, and we are of the opinion that there are chances for us to work together with Huawei to supply our needs in term of communications and the use of AI,” Dr Mahathir told a press conference here today.

Having a keen interest in the technological advances that China has achieved, Dr Mahathir made time in his packed five-day schedule to pay a visit to the two companies' headquarters.

Last Wednesday, when Dr Mahathir was introduced to Huawei’s technologies at the Huawei’s Beijing Research Centre, the prime minister had said the technologies he saw were “very expensive”.

At the time, Huawei founder and chief executive officer Ren Zhengfei told the premier that the country could “rent” the technologies, instead of purchasing them.

Dr Mahathir was also impressed by the AI solutions SenseTime showed him, and said the AI solutions, in particular those relating to sensors, will enable those travelling in vehicles to have a safer journey.

Last Thursday, SenseTime showcased a driving simulator, in which the company demonstrated its AI integration into cars, to the prime minister.

“This sensor will now be able to alert [the driver] on whatever that is near the car or if the car’s speed is too fast, or when there is an obstruction. All these measures which could be done with the sensor will enable a safer automotive journey

“We are of the opinion that if we have a school to teach all these [technology and AI], we can develop our own technology,” said the prime minister.
