KUALA LUMPUR (June 16): Malaysia logged 5,150 new Covid-19 infections today — down from 5,419 yesterday — bringing total cases nationwide to 673,026.

Consequently, the seven-day moving average of daily cases fell to 5,591 from 5,746 the day before.

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said 73 Covid-19-related deaths were reported in the 24 hours as of noon today, including 33 in Selangor, raising the tally of fatalities to 4,142.

Kuala Lumpur, Kedah, Negeri Sembilan, and Sarawak registered six deaths each, while Labuan reported four fatalities. Sabah, Melaka, and Johor reported three deaths each, Pahang two and and Kelantan one.

Active cases dropped further to 67,949 — the lowest since May 27 (69,408) — as new recoveries outpaced new cases at 7,240 today. Total recoveries stood at 600,935 or 89.3% of total Covid-19 patients.

However, the number of patients in intensive care units rose to a fresh high of 924, with 453 of them needing respiratory assistance, said Dr Noor Hisham in his statement.

A total of 84,866 individuals were tested for Covid-19 today, bringing the total number of testing conducted since the beginning of the pandemic to 13,522,560. In comparison, 77,065 individuals were tested yesterday, with 5,419 of them testing positive for the virus.

Of the Covid-19 infections reported today, Selangor topped the list again with 1,914 cases, followed by Negeri Sembilan (607), Sarawak (570) and Johor (392).

The Ministry of Health reported 19 more Covid-19 clusters, comprising 10 workplace clusters, five community clusters and the remaining four linked to high-risk groups.

They were detected in Selangor, Sarawak, Johor, Penang, Melaka, Perak, Sabah, Negeri Sembilan, Kelantan, and Kuala Lumpur.

So far, 2,532 clusters have been identified in the country, of which 1,744 have been declared ended.
