(Sept 1): Transparency International wants Putrajaya to carry out a fully independent investigation into all "corruption allegations” in the country.

In a resolution made in a meeting by delegates from 100 member countries, ahead of the International Anti-Corruption Conference (IACC) tomorrow, Transparency International also demanded that the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) be allowed to operate without political interference.

"Malaysia is facing a major corruption crisis," it said in its press release today.

Transparency International is a global non-governmental organisation whose secretariat is based in Berlin, Germany.

It is the mother organisation to its Malaysian chapter, Transparency International Malaysia (TI-M), which is headed by Datuk Akhbar Satar.

In July, Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail was removed abruptly as Attorney-General, leading to a “conspiracy theory" that the prime minister, who is being investigated over the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) scandal, is determined to stay in office.

Gani was then part of a special task force looking into claims that up to US$700 million (RM2.67 billion) was allegedly transferred from 1MDB into two bank accounts under Datuk Seri Najib Razak's accounts in early 2013.

The prime minister later said the money was from a Middle-East donor.

The task force has since been disbanded. – The Malaysian Insider
