KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 30): The Transport Ministry said today the Malaysian Cabinet had during its meeting yesterday decided that 54 items will be exempted from import licence or permit criteria for transshipment activities under full container load schemes at Malaysian ports with free trade zone status.

In a statement today, the ministry said the move aims to ensure that Malaysian ports stay competitive as a transshipment hub. The 54 items include agriculture products and used electrical appliances.

"The government's decision is expected to encourage international shipping firms to use Malaysian ports as a transhipment hub.

"At the same time, the decision will help Malaysia strengthen its shipping connectivity index with major global ports, hence, supporting the growth in the country's port and maritime sectors," it said.

The ministry said the Cabinet had also decided to retain the enforcement of import licence or permit criteria for 20 items, which involve aspects including security and disease control.

The 20 items include bullet-proof suits, toxic wastes and radioactive materials, according to the ministry.
