KUALA LUMPUR (May 4): The euphoria that greeted the Pakatan Harapan government when it ended the Barisan Nasional’s six-decade-long grip on power last May is now a historic memory. Has the new government lived up to the people’s expectations? How far has it delivered on its manifesto promises?

The Edge invites opinion leaders to give their verdict on a range of sectors and issues. Activist lawyer Datuk Ambiga Sreenevasen scrutinises institutional reforms and proposes further improvements, while business leader Tan Sri Tony Fernandes dwells on the business climate, and how it can be better.

The Edge Chairman Datuk Tong Kooi Ong calls for a fiscal stimulus to the economy, while Deputy Defence Minister Liew Chin Tong discusses measures to ensure political stability.

Former Minister of Finance II Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani, on his part, suggests that news ideas to stimulate the domestic economy are much needed. Likewise, economist Prof Datuk Mohamed Ariff worries that Putrajaya is mistakenly seeking to shift to driving domestic demand to create jobs and increase gross domestic product.

For civil rights activist Zainah Anwar, the government needs to show political courage to do the right thing. As for political analysts Oh Ei Sun and Prof James Chin, the restoration of state rights for Sabah and Sarawak occupy centre stage. As for Prof Mohd Tajuddin Mohd Rasdi, the key to true national harmony lies in an inclusive narrative of Islam.
