KUALA LUMPUR (Oct 12): Malaysia's Industrial Production Index (IPI) in August grew year-on-year by 6.8%, driven by positive growth in all sectors.

In a statement today, the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) said manufacturing grew by 7.6%, mining by 5.3% and electricity by 3%.

The DOSM said the major manufacturing sub-sectors that recorded expansion in August 2017 were the petroleum, chemical, rubber and plastic products coming in at 6.9%; electrical and electronic products, which grew 8.6%; and food, beverages and tobacco product, up by 9.4%.

Meanwhile, the mining sector output grew by 5.4%, compared with 0.2% in July, due mainly to a 14.6% increase in the index for natural gas, while the index for crude oil fell by 1.6%.

On a yearly basis, the electricity sector output expanded by 3%.

Transport equipment and other manufacturers sector grew by 9.95%, compared with just 6.8% in July 2017.
