KUALA LUMPUR (May 17): Malaysia's automotive sales volume climbed 6.2% to 49,964 units in April 2019 from 47,047 a year earlier, led by growth in the passenger vehicle segment, according to the Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA) today.

MAA said in a statement today that passenger vehicle sales volume grew to 45,334 units from 41,939 while commercial vehicle sales declined to 4,630 units from 5,108.

Year to date, MAA said total automotive sales volume rose to 193,028 units from 182,157. Month-on-month, MAA said April automotive sales volume fell.

"Sales volume in April 2019 was 8.8% or 4,812 units lower than March 2019. (The) much higher sales in March 2019 (was) due to rush for deliveries by companies having financial years ending March 31, 2019," MAA said.

According to MAA, April sales volume was lower from a month earlier because consumers adopted a wait-and-see attitude on expectation of Hari Raya Aidilfitri festive season promotions.

"Sales volume for May 2019 is expected to be higher than the April 2019 level (due to) Hari Raya festive season promotional campaigns," it said.
