KUALA LUMPUR (June 4): Malaysia Airlines Bhd said it will not change the configurations of its Airbus A380 fleet to a higher density

The national carrier initially planned to reconfigure its A380 fleet to add more capacity, which would make them more suited for the charter market.

The airline intends to set up a charter unit for the A380s, mainly for Hajj and Umrah pilgrimage traffic to the Middle East. The details regarding the charter unit will be announced soon, according to its statement today.

Malaysia Airlines chief executive officer Captiain Izham Ismail said keeping the current configuration will allow the A380s to be used on certain routes in the airline's network during peak periods.

The company recently signed a three-year agreement with Andalusia Travel & Tours to transport Malaysia pilgrims to Medina and Jeddah from August 2018 to 2021, using their A380s.

The agreement will be transferred to Malaysia Airlines' charter unit after it meets all regulatory and licensing requirements in Malaysia and Saudi Arabia.
