KUALA LUMPUR (June 6): Malaysia Airlines Bhd has reinstated direct flights from Kuala Lumpur to the Australian city of Brisbane, starting today.

There are four flights a week — every Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday — on the route, the national carrier said in a statement.

The airline, which had previously axed KL-Brisbane flights in 2015, said the route will now be operated by the A330-300 with a capacity of 290 seats: 27 in business class and 263 in economy class.

At a send-off event held today at the KL International Airport (KLIA), Malaysia’s Airlines launched its inaugural Brisbane-bound flight MH135, which departed at 10.30am.

Present at the send-off event was Malaysia Airlines’ chief commercial officer Arved von zur Muehlen who said Australia was one of the airline’s biggest markets, most notably Brisbane, the nation’s third most populous city.

“We are excited to be returning to Brisbane to offer passengers better connectivity with our four times weekly direct flights into the city. At the same time, this is to also encourage passengers to explore Malaysia, which is famous for its rich attractions.

“We are also committed to build a consistent delivery of exceptional service across all customer touch-points via our latest products and services to enhance our passenger’s travel experience,” Muehlen added.

Tourism Australia managing director John O’Sullivan said: “Malaysia continues to be a significant contributor to Australia’s visitor economy with around 400,000 Malaysians travelling to our country each year, and we continue to work closely with our longstanding partner Malaysia Airlines to realise the tourism opportunities of the market.”
