(Oct 23): Malaysia and Indonesia have agreed to a slight increase in monthly wages for Indonesian maids from the current RM800, but Human Resources Minister Datuk Seri Richard Riot declined to reveal the exact quantum, The Star reported.

He was reported saying however that the increase did not meet what Indonesia wanted for its maids.

"I won’t disclose the figure, ada naik sikit (there is a slight increase) but not to the amount which Indonesia asked for," Riot was quoted as saying in the report.

He added that they would call for a meeting with the Malaysian Maid Employers Association (MAMA) and the Malaysian Association of Foreign Maid Agencies (PAPA) on the agreed rate.

In May, Indonesia sent a memorandum to the Malaysian government requesting the minimum wage of RM700 per month be raised to RM1,200 for Indonesian maids in Malaysia.

The proposal was made in an effort to boost the competitiveness of domestic maid services in Malaysia and help curb the influx of illegal immigrants.

Last June, Bernama reported Riot as saying that Indonesia's proposal to raise the salary for domestic maids to RM1,200 was too high compared with the minimum wage of RM900 in Malaysia. – The Malaysian Insider
