KUALA LUMPUR (Oct 23): Malaysia's September consumer price index (CPI) rose by 2.6% to 113.6 points, from 110.7 points in the same month last year.

In a statement today, Department of Statistics (DoS) said the rise was led by increases in the index for alcoholic beverages and tobacco (9.8%); miscellaneous goods and services (5.6%); health, and restaurants and hotels (4.6%); food and non-alcoholic beverages (4.3%); and furnishing, household equipment and routine household maintenance (3.7%).

"These six groups of goods and services, which weighted 47.4, contributed 86.6% to the increase in the CPI for the month of September 2015," the national statistics department said.

"In addition, the overall index is also influenced by the increase in communication (3.2%); housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels group (2.7%); and education (2.5%)," it added.

Nevertheless, the CPI for September fell by 0.3% when compared with previous month.

"Of the twelve major groups, seven recorded an increase, one registered a decline while four remained unchanged," the statement read.

The month-on-month (m-o-m) decrease was mainly dragged by the transport group, which fell 2.8% to 106.8 points in September.

However, there was a 0.2% m-o-m increase in the index for food and non-alcoholic beverages in September.

DoS noted that this was the result of increases in the index for food at home (0.3%); food away from home (0.2%); and coffee, tea, cocoa and non-alcoholic beverages (0.3%).

For the first nine months of 2015, DoS revealed that there was an increase of 1.9% in CPI year-on-year, led by food and non-alcoholic beverages (3.4%); and housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels (2.4%).

"The increase of 3.4% in the index for food and non-alcoholic beverages was the result of increases for food at home (3.2%); food away from home (3.8%); and coffee, tea, cocoa and non-alcoholic beverages (2.3%)," it elaborated.

According to DoS, among the subgroups of food at home, which showed significant increases during this period, were vegetables (5.9%); milk and eggs (5.4%); fish and seafood (3.6%); and fruits (3.5%).
