KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 27): Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid is resigning as Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) chairman following his appointment as a cabinet minister.

In a bourse filing, TNB said the resignation will take effect on Sunday (Aug 29).

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, who announced his cabinet line-up today, named Mahdzir as the minister of rural development.

The new cabinet members are scheduled to be sworn in at Istana Negara on Monday (Aug 30).

Mahdzir, 60, served as chairman of TNB since May 12, 2020, when he took over from Tan Sri Ahmad Badri Mohd Zahir, who was appointed Employee Provident Fund chairman.

Mahdzir, who is the member of Parliament for Padang Terap, had previously served as Kedah menteri besar and federal education minister.

TNB’s share price rose eight sen or 0.78% to close at RM10.38 today, giving the group a market capitalisation of RM59.44 billion.
