KUALA LUMPUR (Sept 10): The number of passengers passing through the 39 airports Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) manages in the country rose by 9.2% year-on-year (y-o-y) in August.

A total of 9.24 million passengers travelled through the airports in Malaysia in August, up from 8.47 million a year ago.

MAHB said international traffic rose 7% y-o-y to six million passengers, while domestic traffic grew 7.9% y-o-y to 6.6 million passengers.

"The domestic passenger movements growth was mainly contributed by Malindo Air and AirAsia Group Bhd," said MAHB in a bourse filing today.

The Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) handled 5.4 million passengers in August, a growth of 6.7% from 5.07 million passengers recorded a year ago. Out of this, passenger traffic at KLIA Main Terminal grew 4.7% y-o-y to 2.59 million from 2.47 million, while traffic at klia2 rose at a higher 8.5% y-o-y to 2.82 million, from 2.6 million.

"The technical glitch to KLIA’s Total Airport Management System (TAMS) for a few days from Aug 21 did cause flight delays, as well as inconvenience to airlines, passengers and public, but there was hardly any material negative impact on demand for air travel," MAHB said.

Overall, aircraft movements at the 39 airports went up 5.2% y-o-y in August, with international and domestic movements registering an increase of 1.5% and 7.7% respectively.

Systemwide, including its Istanbul operations in Turkey, MAHB handled 7.5% more passengers at 12.67 million in August, compared with 11.79 million in August last year.

The airport operator said the 12.67 million passenger movement figure and the 7.5% y-o-y growth for August are the highest handled for a month year-to-date.

Istanbul Sabiha Gokcen International Airport's (SGIA) passenger traffic grew 3.1% y-o-y in August, as it saw international traffic increase by 17.5% y-o-y, which was offset by a 5.4% decline in domestic passenger movements.

For the first eight months of 2019, passenger traffic at the 39 airports in Malaysia improved 5.6% to 69.58 million from 65.86 million a year ago. International passenger movements grew 2% to 35.25 million passengers over the same period in 2018, while domestic traffic rose 9.7% to 34.33 million.

MAHB shares closed up seven sen or 0.82% to close at RM8.57 today, with 3.04 million shares done, valuing the group at RM14.22 billion.
