KUALA LUMPUR (April 10): Passenger volume at the 39 airports Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) operates in Malaysia rose by 3.1% annually to 8.88 million in March, said the company in a Bursa Malaysia filing today.

The domestic sector grew by 6.9% to 4.4 million while international passenger traffic declined by 0.4% to 4.5 million passengers.

Overall aircraft movements increased by 1%, with the 2.5% growth in domestic movements offset by the 1.2% decline in international aircraft movements.

At KLIA, passenger traffic dipped by 0.04% in March to 5.2 million, pulled down by a 0.7% decline in the international sector to 3.8 million passengers.

At the KLIA main terminal, passenger movements fell by 0.6% while traffic at klia2 increased by 0.6%.

MAHB pointed out that its 1Q2019 figures affected by Seletar flight suspension and Boeing 737 Max groundings.

For the first quarter of the year (1Q2019), the airport operator saw a growth of 3.9% to 25.39 million passengers from 24.45 million passengers during the same period a year ago.

The group attributed the increase in Malaysian traffic in the first three months to growth in the domestic sector caused partly by the higher seat capacity offered by airlines to meet demand.

This is as domestic passenger traffic increased by 7.7%, while international traffic saw a slight increase to 0.6%.

“International passenger volume remains above the average high base traffic achieved in 2H2018 although there are some signs of adjustments partly due to aircraft utilisation, exit and entry in airlines operations on parallel routes and the temporary suspension of Firefly’s operation to Seletar, Singapore,” it said.

It added the grounding of the six Boeing 737 Max’s following the recent Ethiopian Airlines crash and the Lion Air crash in October 2018 may result in fewer flights from Indonesia.

“The recent grounding of the B737 MAX may have a further negative impact on Indonesian carriers’ capacity to Malaysia. However, the impact from this may not be significant as most of the Indonesia sectors have competing operators.”

At KLIA’s main terminal, traffic rose by 0.9% to 6.97 million passengers while at klia2, passenger movement rose 1% to 8.2 million passengers.

Meanwhile, MAHB’s Istanbul Sabhina Gokcen International Airport (SGIA) saw passenger traffic rise by 3.1% to 2.81 million in March from a year ago.

In 1Q2019, the airport’s passenger traffic rose by 3.3% to 8.05 million from a year ago.

Overall, total system traffic in March increased 3.1% to 11.69 million passengers from 11.34 million passengers a year ago.

Year-to-date, the airport operator’s 1Q2019 saw a 3.7% increase to 33.45 million passengers

On its prospects, the group said future seat capacity filings by airlines is forecast to remain above expectations and is cautiously optimistic over achieving 4.9% growth this year.

“The domestic traffic correction and consolidation is expected to continue while the international sector may see some improvement. Istanbul SGIA performance will likely maintain its growth momentum especially for the international passenger traffic,” said the group.

The counter closed 2.74% or 19 sen lower at RM6.75 — with 4.3 million shares traded — giving the group a market capitalisation of RM11.2 billion.
