(June 11): The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) is proposing a new law for offenders who sabotage the national economy.

MACC chief Tan Sri Dr Abu Kassim Mohamed said the new law would be implemented to counter activities by irresponsible parties who try to sabotage the national economic policy.

"For instance, if a contract is given to A, but A then sells (the contract) 100% to somebody else, then it is a crime involving the economy and action must be taken against them.

"Although at present there are procedures to prevent this from happening, more stern action should be taken because economy is the pillar of a nation's development," he told reporters after attending a talk on corruption organised by Malay rights group Perkasa in Kuala Lumpur today.

Kassim said the proposal to form a law related to national economy must be discussed first with legal experts, related bodies as well as non-governmental organisations. – The Malaysian Insider
