KUALA LUMPUR (April 22): The Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA) said total vehicle sales or total industry volume for March jumped 62.5% from the previous month, underpinned by aggressive push for higher sales by automotive retailers, and with March being a longer working month.

In a statement on Friday (April 22), the association said monthly sales of passenger vehicles rose to 65,902 units in March from 58,498 units in the same month last year, while sales of commercial vehicles rose to 7,320 units from 6,440 units.

This raised year-to-date (YTD) vehicle sales to 159,752 units, up 7.83% from 148,155 units in the same period last year.

However, total vehicle production for the month slipped 3.72% to 59,908 units from 62,221 units a year ago.

Still, YTD volume showed an increase of 4.81% to 154,160 units, compared with 147,086 units in the corresponding period last year.

Looking ahead, the association believes that April sales will trend lower due to shortage of chips and components, and that the delay in shipments may affect some companies.

On top of that, much of the sales have already been fulfilled by companies having their financial year ended on March 31, 2022, it added.
