KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 17): The Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA) said vehicle sales in July rose 14% to 48,553 units, compared with 42,483 in the same month last year.

The rise was supported by a 16% growth in passenger vehicle sales and 4% increase in commercial vehicle sales.

Production for the month rose 12% to 43,952 from 39,097 in the previous year, mainly due to a 16% growth in passenger vehicle production, which was partly mitigated by a 17% fall in commercial vehicle production.

MAA said total industry volume for the month was 4.7% higher year-on-year (y-o-y).

For the year up to July, vehicle sales climbed 5% y-o-y to 333,010 from 317,966, while production dipped 1% to 299,270.

On a month-on-month (m-o-m) basis, sales retreated 3.4% from June’s total sales of 50,275, while production jumped 37% from 32,179.

MAA attributed the m-o-m decline in sales to the Hari Raya holidays, as well as glitches in the ‘e-daftar’ system which had affected the registration process for vehicles.

Looking ahead, the association expects sales volume to be better in August, in view of ongoing promotional campaigns by car companies and fulfilment of back orders following the expected recovery of the ‘e-daftar’ system.
