KUALA LUMPUR (Sept 21): The Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA) said total industry volume (TIV) increased 147% month-on-month from 7,086 units in July, as showrooms in many states — including key states like Selangor and Kuala Lumpur — were allowed to operate since Aug 13.

Year-on-year (y-o-y), the total sales of vehicles in Malaysia declined 67% to 17,500 units in August 2021, from 53,838 units. The sales of passenger vehicles fell to 15,064 units from 48,598 units, while the sales of commercial vehicles fell 53% to 2,436 units from 5,240 units.

Year-to-date (YTD), total vehicle sales stood at 273,757 units, a 4.4% decline from 286,261 units in the same period last year.

Meanwhile, total vehicle production was down 72% y-o-y at 13,961 units in August from 50,196 units, and slightly lower YTD at 258,024 units, versus 263,876 units in the corresponding period last year.

Looking ahead, the association expects car sales to increase in September, supported by the resumption of operations of businesses in most industries and ongoing efforts of car companies to boost sales and generate revenues.

However, it said the shortage of chips may affect certain makes.
