KUALA LUMPUR (Oct 24): The FBM KLCI settled down 1.59 points or 0.1% at Bursa Malaysia's afternoon break today on profit taking and after the ringgit strengthened sharply against the US dollar this morning.

At 12:30pm, the KLCI settled lower at 1,567.20 after rising to its intraday high of 1,571.43. In currency markets, the ringgit appreciated sharply to its strongest level against the US dollar so far today at 4.1815.

At 12:30pm, Bursa Malaysia's top decliners included KLCI components Petronas Gas Bhd and Sime Darby Plantation Bhd.

The KLCI's technical indicators are also closely watched. Affin Hwang Investment Bank Bhd wrote in a note today that from a technical viewpoint, the break below the 1,580 support level indicates the resumption of the prevailing downward movement in the index.

"Overall, (the KLCI's) downward trend remains intact. Next week, market focus will be on the small and mid-cap growth stocks, which have consolidated or corrected significantly whereas big-caps will continue to correct," Affin Hwang said.
