PUTRAJAYA (Feb 4): A judge who had convicted former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak of abuse of power, criminal breach of trust and money laundering involving SRC International Sdn Bhd at the High Court in 2020 was elevated as a Court of Appeal judge.

Justice Datuk Mohd Nazlan Mohd Ghazali, who will turn 55 this year, also made headlines late last year when he declared the existence of vernacular schools as constitutional.

His decision to convict Najib, sentencing him to 12 years' jail with a RM210 million fine, was upheld by the Court of Appeal last Dec 8.

Also being elevated is Court of Appeal judge Justice Datuk Mohd Zabidin Mohd Diah, 64, who in 2012 as High Court judge acquitted Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in the Sodomy II case. He has been promoted to the Federal Court.

Justice Nazlan took his oath before Court of Appeal president Tan Sri Rohana Yusuf while Justice Zabidin took his before Chief Justice Tun Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat.

Meanwhile, former Securities Commission prosecution director Roz Mawar Rozain is among the 11 new judicial commissioners (JCs) appointed.

Others included deputy head I of the civil division of the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AG Chambers) Azizan Md Arshad; former senior federal counsel in AG Chambers S Narkunavathy; Certificate of Legal Practice examination former director Jamhirah Ali; Noor Ruwena Nordin, who was from the Advisory Board in the Prime Minister’s Department; Noor Hayati Mat, formerly Industrial Court chairperson; and Sessions court judge Rozi Bainon.

Lawyers who were appointed JCs included Noor Hisham Ismail, Azlan Sulaiman, Leong Wai Hong and Kenneth Yoong St James.

Also present in the Friday (Feb 4) afternoon oath taking event were Chief Judge of Malaya, Tan Sri Azahar Mohamed; Chief Judge of Sabah and Sarawak, Tan Sri Abang Iskandar Abang Hashim, Federal Court and Court of Appeal judges.

Minister in the Prime Minister's Department, Datuk Seri Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar; Attorney General, Tan Sri Idrus Harun and Malaysian Bar president, A G Kalidas were also present.
