KUALA LUMPUR (Oct 4): The Sultan of Johor’s daughter, Tunku Tun Aminah Sultan Ibrahim Ismail, has been appointed the Berjaya Assets Bhd (BAssets)’s new non-independent and non-executive chairman, effective today.

In a filing with Bursa Malaysia, BAssets said Tun Aminah has been chairman of telecommunication specialist REDtone International Bhd, a subsidiary of Berjaya Corp Bhd, since March 3, 2017.

“She has considerable experience in heading private organisations across a broad range of industries,” the filing added.

Tun Aminah is also on the board of several other private companies, including Berjaya Waterfront Sdn Bhd, REDtone Network Sdn Bhd, Jauhari Maksima Sdn Bhd and Ibzi Holdings Sdn Bhd.

Berjaya Corp holds a 16.81% stake in BAssets, while Johor ruler Sultan Ibrahim Ismail has surfaced as the second largest individual shareholder in BAssets with a 10.09% stake after acquiring 80 million shares, raising his total held to 120 million shares.

BAssets owns Berjaya Times Square Sdn Bhd, BTS Car Park Sdn Bhd, Berjaya Waterfront Sdn Bhd, Berjaya Assets Food (BAF) Sdn Bhd and Sublime Cartel Sdn Bhd.

The group also owns 65% of Natural Avenue Sdn Bhd, which operates number forecast lotteries in Sarawak.

Outside the corporate world, Tun Aminah is president of the Johor Darul Ta'zim Football Club (JDT), and patron of SPCA Johor Bahru and the chairperson of the Johor Cerebral Palsy Association,” BAssets’ filing read. Tun Aminah is a graduate of the La Salle School of Arts in Singapore.

BAssets closed down two sen or 1.72% to RM1.14 today with 210,500 shares done, for a market capitalisation of RM1.36 billion. Year to date, the counter has gained about 26%.
