KUALA LUMPUR (Jan 4): Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad says the Johor crown prince, Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim, allegedly lacks proper understanding of the country's federation concept.

"He does not understand about the (concept) of federation (of Malaysia)," Dr Mahathir told reporters after chairing Pakatan Harapan's (PH) presidential council meeting at Yayasan Al-Bukhary.

"Maybe he was not born at the time (during the federation of states), but I was already there (long time ago)," added the PH chairman.

According to Dr Mahathir, under the federation system, the federal government is allowed to issue statements and voice out its concerns over certain actions of the state.

"(Technically) the federal government has powers over the whole territories, with some powers vested under the federal government and some other powers vested under the state.

"It was never mentioned that the federal government is not allowed to voice out its concerns over state matters. That's against the spirit of the federation," he added.

Recently, Tunku Ismail said the Putrajaya should stop politicising various issues and focus on governing the country.
