KUALA LUMPUR (Sept 14): Jelutong (PH) member of Parliament (MP) RSN Rayer has been ejected from the Dewan Rakyat and suspended for two days after he and other opposition MPs hit out at Dewan Rakyat Deputy Speaker Datuk Mohd Rashid Hasnon, calling him “shameful” for rejecting a motion to replace Speaker Datuk Azhar Azizan Harun.

Rashid was called in by Azhar to replace him at the helm after opposition MPs such as M Kulasegaran (PH-Ipoh Barat) and Gobind Singh Deo (PH-Puchong) had asked why the motions to replace Azhar were excluded from the order paper without informing federal lawmakers.

Azhar told the house that he was told Rashid rejected the motion, and that he had nothing to do with it as it is a conflict of interest.

After much insisting from the opposition MPs, Rashid was called in, and he explained that he received eleven motions from two opposition parties to replace Azhar but they were rejected because they did not comply with the standing orders.

“I don’t need to answer anyone, I have already answered in the media and I have already answered to the proposers of the motion,” he said.

This sent the House into a barrage of shouts as opposition MPs demanded Rashid justify his actions, with Rayer saying the Speaker committed a “shameful act”.

This had provoked the ire of Rashid, who demanded that Rayer retract his statement.

Rayer had refused after two warnings and was then ushered out of the House by the bailiffs.

Rashid then said Rayer is suspended from the House for two days.

Previously, Azhar said he had received motions for his resignation and replacement as Speaker of the House. He said whatever decisions to be made on this motion should be handled by the Deputy of the House, who is Rashid.
