KUALA LUMPUR (July 1): The Council of Eminent Persons (CEP) is not forcing CIMB Group Holdings Bhd chairman Datuk Seri Nazir Razak to resign before his contract term ends in August next year, says its chairman Tun Daim Zainuddin in a Bernama report today.

Daim said it is entirely up to Nazir whether or not to do so.

“It is up to him; everyone has (to fulfil a) contract. If he wants to step down early, it's up to him,” he was quoted as saying when asked to comment on a recent news report that Nazir will be leaving the banking group.

On Saturday, Nazir issued a statement denying a news report that he was leaving his post as chairman of CIMB Group, saying he has yet to decide whether to seek an extension to his tenure when it ends in August next year. Nazir added that he has also not communicated with anyone or any bodies about his position.

However, Nazir said he would step aside if the board of directors and shareholders of the banking group and Bank Negara Malaysia wished for him to do so early.
