KUALA LUMPUR (Oct 30): The Singapore High Commission has clarified that Malaysia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs had informed it of the postponement of the Malaysia-Singapore leaders' retreat that was meant to be held in late next month.

"Singapore had initially agreed to Malaysia's proposal to hold the retreat in late-November 2018.

"However, on Oct 23, 2018, the Malaysian Ministry of Foreign Affairs informed us of the postponement of the retreat due to scheduling constraints on the Malaysian side," the high commission said in a letter to Malaysiakini.

The letter was aimed at clarifying a Malaysiakini report this morning that cited Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad as saying he was unaware the leaders' retreat had been postponed.

The high commission said it was puzzled by the report which claimed that Singapore's foreign affairs ministry "appeared to have unilaterally announced the decision to postpone the meeting" two days ago.

No date had initially been fixed for the meeting that was planned to be held in Putrajaya between Dr Mahathir and his Singaporean counterpart Lee Hsien Loong.

"Singapore looks forward to Malaysia hosting the next leaders' retreat at a mutually convenient date," the high commission said in its letter.
