(July 31): Former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said he will no longer speak about 1Malaysia Development Bhd's (1MDB) debts as it was now considered a "crime" to raise questions about the troubled state investment firm.

"I cannot answer any questions about 1MDB now because it a crime to talk about 1MDB, he told reporters today after an event at the Prince Court Medical Centre in Kuala Lumpur.

Dr Mahathir has been a vocal critic of 1MDB, even calling on Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak to step down over his handling of the firm, of which he is advisory board chairman.

The retired leader's comments comes days after Najib sacked Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin as deputy prime minister and education minister, in a move seen by critics as a purge of ministers who had openly questioned him over 1MDB. – The Malaysian Insider
