KUALA LUMPUR (Oct 18): The Inland Revenue Board (IRB) has announced the appointment of Datuk Mohd Nizom Sairi as its new chief executive officer (CEO) effective Tuesday (Oct 19).

Mohd Nizom, the tax agency’s deputy CEO (tax operations), is replacing Datuk Seri Dr Sabin Samitah.

“IRB records its highest appreciation to Datuk Seri Dr Sabin Samitah for his contribution during his tenure at IRB,” the agency said in a statement on Monday.

IRB did not say why it had cut short the contract of Sabin, who was appointed as CEO when Datuk Seri Najib Razak was the prime minister.

Najib had recently made a police report against Sabin, claiming that the latter had abused his power by working with some unnamed politicians to take action against the former premier in relation to RM1.7 billion in alleged unpaid taxes.

IRB, in its statement said Mohd Nizom, 58, who holds a masters’ degree from Lawrence Technological University in the US, joined the IRB on Nov 13, 1985, and has extensive experience in the field of direct taxation, covering tax operations, tax compliance and tax collection, international taxation and tax training.

Prior to holding the portfolio of deputy CEO, Mohd Nizom held several key positions in IRB including director of the agency’s investigation department, director of the Malaysian Tax Academy, director of the Tax Compliance Department and Perak IRB director. He had also served as the deputy CEO (management).

“IRB congratulates Datuk Mohd Nizom Sairi on his appointment [as CEO]. His vast experience will certainly enable IRB to achieve its vision to become a leading tax administrator, in line with the aspiration to build an inclusive Keluarga Malaysia,” said IRB.
