KUALA LUMPUR (March 16): Nearly five months after taking the hot seat at the Securities Commission Malaysia (SC), chairman Datuk Syed Zaid Albar is charting a transformative agenda forward for the capital market.

In his first interview since assuming office, Syed Zaid outlines his ‘AAA’ vision that aims to energise the capital markets to become more vibrant, inclusive and agile.

A big part of those plans will entail attracting the next generation of investors who are so far not very keen on participating in the good old stock market.

Instead, numbers show that the younger investors are far more interested in digital investing avenues, a newly nascent niche in the capital market that the SC is still working to develop.

Meantime, a large part of the business community — who make up nearly half the national economy — is still not tapping the capital markets for their funding needs, according to the SC.

And the big questions still loom large. Among them is, what will the SC do about Bursa Malaysia’s conflicting roles as both a regulator and a public-listed entity?

Read all about these and more in the latest issue of The Edge Malaysia, featuring an exclusive interview with newly minted SC chief Syed Zaid.
